An artist residency in a shack like this? Um, yes please! Fogo Island is an outpost of Newfoundland off the east coast of Canada. The whole project is part of a renewal plan for the island by developing it into a cultural, ecological and culinary tourism destination. Part of the plan includes the building of six studios for artist in residency programs for artists from around the world. Designed by Newfoundland born Todd Saunders, the approach was to construct strong geometric shapes that contrast the surrounding environment without competing with it. Well, he nailed that part.
With four completed and the remaining two due for construction this year as well as a 29 room inn, art gallery and culinary centre, it's looking to be quite an initiative. Will definitely be keeping my eye on the further developments to come!
