Carla Jovenda Wijaya, a student in the Bachelor of Architecture program at NewSchool of Architecture and Design, has been awarded second place in the seekingSHADE Student Design Competition. The competition was open to all college students in the United States and challenged students from architecture, design, and engineering disciplines to design a shade structure for the pedestrian bridge at the Land Port of Entry in San Ysidro, California. As the bridge would welcome people to the United States, it needed to be iconic, environmentally sensitive, and complement the existing Port design.
Wijaya used steel rods and stretched fabric materials because they achieved her aesthetic goals while providing durability and flexibility. "At night, the dispersed light would make the bridge glow and the shadows and silhouette from the aluminum panels, structure and tension cables would make the bridge appear like a semi-porous membrane."
