The simplicity of light and dark are pushed to the hypnotising extreme in this transfixing video for experimental musician Thunder Tillman.
The video is the work of filmmaker and art director Mario Hugo, and designer Johnny Lee, and explores form and pattern through rapid-fire animation. The reduced aesthetic is signature of Hugo’s incredible body of work, in which various projects use strings of light to create shapes and compositions. "I’ve always been interested in how to create the most evocative imagery with the simplest principles or elements,” says Hugo. “How far can we push shape, light, and shadow?” Alignments, is a pulsating, repeating electronic track constructed with sounds reminiscent of the early digital era. The video takes this queue but without any attempt at a cliché reproduction.
“This video was inspired by TV," shares Hugo. "I’m a child of the '80s and I remember sitting a couple feet away from an old CRT during the synthesizer sequence in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or sitting through epic network showings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, not even really knowing what I was watching, but totally drawn in by the way light and colors would bleed and bloom unexpectedly."
