Tatiana Tavares is a graphic design tutor at Media Design School (Auckland, New Zealand). Recently she won a medal at the Best Awards for her illustrated book. The story, called Carnival Land, is an illustrated allegory designed for an adult readership.
Carnival Land is the story of a young woman's quest for a place to belong and her eventual transformation at the Carnival parade. It is based on Tatiana's own experiences moving from Brazil to New Zealand. Her character stumbles through exploitation and promises as she tries to find her true self. The book's written voice switches between English and Portuguese, eventually reaching a harmonious balance between the two when the protagonist finds her identity. Tatiana uses photo montage and highly 'staged' illustrative treatments to communicate the sense of disconnection and ambivalence that she experienced as an immigrant.
