This photograph was taken on Australia day earlier this year. It is one of my all time favourite pieces, as it reflects notions that are much deeper than what might first meet the eye. The young woman in the image is my good childhood friend Sarah-Jane. Her heritage is Italian, however she has lived amidst the beauty of the Australian beaches her whole life and would consider herself nothing but pure, untainted Aussie. After first taking this photo I was astounded at the large extent to which her reflection seemed to emulate her Italian father's appearance. The appearance, however has been greatly distorted amidst the waves of the smooth Australian water, and its upside-down composition and crazed eyes elicit a sense that her fathers reflection is drowning. This is further intended to communicate the notion that Sarah-Jane's Italian culture, swept and distorted amidst the waves of her Australian lifestyle, has become immersed by the new generation and culture of her family.
