“Girlhood” explores the idea of female adolescence. Inspired by the film ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ and Justine Kurland and her series “Girl Pictures” (1997-2002), whom both candidly showcase girls on the brink of adulthood. Through videography and photography, my body of work draws upon my personal experience as a teenage girl. My choice of silk, satin and organza, as materials for the photographs relates to the gentle, soft and traditional aspects of femininity. My work explores the transition between adolescence and adulthood while in chorus with innocence, pre-sexual love & femininity. I have staged scenes that represent moments in my childhood which strike me with emotions of nostalgia and warmth. These moments have all occurred in the summer, waiting for time to pass, full of ingratitude, curiosity and exploration with my many sisters.
