Rationale ~ My dear Dad, 67, indulges his retirement in what he loves - gaming. I don’t see why knitting or gardening are more worthy retiree activities. I wanted to challenge the stereotype and social ideals of the ‘gamer’, by simply replacing the teenage boy. I also wanted to suggest a glimpse of the future. I envisage gaming will be an ordinary past time for my generation, or the next, in retirement.
I softened the key lighting from the window to Dad’s right using only the ordinary household items available to bounce light off the walls, ceiling, and white sheet I had laid under his feet.
I wanted a free, fun yet, intense feel of the ‘ordinary’ gamer. Soft lighting also compliments Dad’s sweet character. I positioned myself in-between Dad and the TV to capture the genuine emotion of gameplay, shared by all gamers.
Altered foreground to black and white and the rear wall to bright pink, to contrast age against a modern backdrop, to give it a fun and pop art feel.
