Overview
My designs throughout this zine are focused on communicating Waitawa’s beauty, and by exhibiting this beauty I intend to convey the ultimate message of preserving our local slithers of paradise, as not only do they hold significant value to the Maori, they are what makes up the almighty paradise we call home, Aotearoa. The juxtaposition of the man-made architecture on pages 3 and 4 stands out not only through the contrasting colours, but also conveys the idea of man fabricating upon sacred land, and the low opacity of the grass represents the loss of whenua . Kaitiakitanga, the Maori concept of guardianship of the sky, the sea and the land is something I am deeply passionate about, and utilising two of my passions, art and environmentalism into my work, is the perfect way I can inspire others to appreciate just how amazing our home is, and through this they too will understand the extreme importance of making ethical choices everyday to ensure the conservation of our backyard.
