Title: Ramon concept. Date: June 2015. Created using Photoshop. This Ramona came into design when I was informed that my world should take a darker turn. I was torn at first. In the end it would be the right choice to scrap this for a more punk street look.

Title: Final Ramona Design. Date: July 2015 created using Pencil and Photoshop. This is the final Ramona design. Her change to a young adult saw her get a new outfit that not only represented her change in personality, but of the entire world of Fragment Strays.

Title: Sketch Page. Date: July 2015. Created on Photoshop. This a page I made that was used to help decide what should exist for Ramona’s new dark punk rock theme. One aspect I kept in mind is her profession. She’s a combatant not a model.

Title: Sketch page 2.0. Date: 2nd of October 2015. Created on Photoshop. Literally a day before this piece was updated, I decided that I would make Ramona the one who transforms. So I did some sketches updated the eyes and thought, why not include it in final design project?

Title: Dreadwood. Date: 5th of October 2015. Created on Photoshop. For my folio boards I already had some other landscape works ready to present. Looking back at them I realised I was capable of more, so I decided to pick a setting that would fit and give a shot at creating a much more detailed piece.

Title: Blood Beast Encounter. Date: August 2015. Created on Photoshop. This was one of my first attempts at doing an environment landscape. Since my design comic was meant to be reminiscent of rpg video games, this landscape is meant to represent a boss fight.

Title: Blood Beast and Silhouettes. Date August 2015. Created on Photoshop. This page is a bunch of silhouettes that eventually leads into, not only my giant blood crystal monster featured on the previous landscape. It also contains silhouette enemies that like many other things would unfortunately not make the cut.

Title: The Rot Worm Butchers. Date: August 2015. Created on Photoshop. These 3 abominations are group of villains that never quite made the cut for my design project. They were meant to be a savage bunch of metal faced cannibal humans. Even though design board took to darker roads, this group of monsters were just too gruesome an idea.

Title: The Chrononaughts. Date: February 2015. Created on Photoshop. This is another set of my silhouettes that depict ideas that never quite made it to my design board. A bunch of time travelling dysfunctional explorers. The two in this where my attempts to create B.U.D-E “Buddy” the best friend robot and a gun slinging space raptor.

Title: Garm, the Executioner. Date July 2015. Created on Photoshop. This cyber knight is the second protagonist of my design board, he went from a Battle chasers rip off to developing a more unique personality. His change to some sort of gothic cyber knight helped my design move more towards a dark techno fantasy.

Title: Garm, the Executioner (art test). Date July 2015. Created on Photoshop. This is simply my attempt at digitally painting over the original line art.

Title: Hearth and Ramona, Jake Parker style. Date: March 2015. Created with pencil, ink and promarkers, backgrounds added in Photoshop. For my design board I had to explore other art styles. To do this I looked at Jake Parkers art works and attempted to draw two of my own characters in a similar style.

Title: Old Nerro. Date: June-August 2015. Created (left image) with Pencil, pen and Photoshop (right image) Photoshop. This is Fragment Strays antagonist Nerro Pellek, Nerro is the generic twisted humoured sociopath. For this to be expressed his features are exaggerated and given more battle scarred bestial themes.

Title: Current Nerro. Date: August 2015. Created using Photoshop. Nerro for me was almost meant to be super human in strength and sub human in humanity. To further exemplify this trait I made him seem almost human but not quite human enough. This would be taken further in my comic strip when his 3rd eye is revealed.

Title: ‘Worgen’ Nerro. Date August 2015. Created with Pencil and Promarkers. This ‘wolf’ Nerro was meant to be a sort of Transformative state. Originally he would reveal his inhumanity through a bloody transformation at the end of the comic strip.

Title: Comic book page #2. Date: August 2015. Drawn with pencil. The second page of my comic book is a build up towards the fight starting. On this page Ramona uses magic to shoot Nerro in to the air, at the surprise of the other characters.

Title: Comic book page #3. Date: August 2015. Drawn with pencil. The third page of my comic is when Nerro proves his inhumanity. Through shrugging of an attack which would kill most men. This is where the action really begins.

Title: Comic book page #4. Date: September 2015. Drawn with pencil. In this Page Ramona truly express her warrior instinct. Having her act so quickly and ruthlessly helped contrast the difference of personality between her and the almost masochistic Nerro. It also allowed Ramona’s pendant, a sort of hidden 5th character, have more dialogue.

Title: Comic book page #5. Date: September 2015. Drawn with pencil. Nerro is not one for boasting and I turns out his electrical display was more than just a simple light trick. Despite such tremendous wounds neither Ramona nor Nerro are going to let themselves be taken out in singular attacks.

Title: Work In Progress. Date: October 1st 2015. Updated using Photoshop. This is just a small sample showing how my comic is developing. Main aspect I brought in was an old idea. A 'Hell' mode for Ramona.

Title: Morgana. Date: June 2015. Originally my main antagonist, Morgana unfortunately would take a back seat as my design project continued. She’s meant to example everything Ramona isn’t physically and mentally. Sephiroth was who I had in mind when I was creating her. She’s not one for boasting, when she fights she fights to kill.

Title: Digital Hearts. Date: October 2014. Created with Photoshop. This was a gift I made for a friend, I included it because I’m proud of how I managed to translate Sora’s outfit from Kingdom Hearts onto a Veemon from Digimon. I was attempting to mirror one of kingdom hearts creator, Tetsuya Nomura’s, pieces.

Title: My first Landscape. Date: May 2015. Created with Photoshop. In my later landscape attempt I was making it seem like a boss encounter than a landscape. However in this case I wanted it to feel like finding an important npc at the end of a quest. So I chose a mistier atmosphere.

Title: The fifth page (finished). Date: October 2015. Created through pencil and ink which was moved to photoshop. This shows the fifth page of my comic book completed. As time went on I began to realise whilst my knowledge of digital painting is limited it certainly exceeds my knowledge of comic book colouring, thus the change was made.

Title: The final page. Date: October 2015. Created through pencil and ink which was moved over to photoshop. This was my last page so naturally it had to be the most dynamic. Though it’s mostly done in a more painted format, I took some advice from comic book art with the final shot’s orange atmosphere and directional lines to help suggest motion.

Title: Pop vinyl. Date October 2015. Created using modelling clay and modelling paint. As stress mounted at the end of the year, I had to find a new alternative to help keep my project exciting. In the end Merchandising always seemed like a fascinating idea. And what merchandise captures the eye of children and adult alike more than a Pop vinyl.

Title Pop Vinyl with box. Date October 2015. Vinyl (same as above) Box created on Photoshop with printed card. What Pop Vinyl would be complete without its signature packaging? To help show mine’s individuality and fit with my design brief, a slightly altered special edition box seemed like a nice touch.

Title: Landscape Elements. Date: April 2015. Created in Photoshop. These go back before the design board. In a previous assessment I had to show different techniques, so I chose digital painting as one of mine. In the long run this would technically count as my first landscape piece.

Title: The Salarian. Date: March 2014. Created with Photoshop. This is probably the first ever piece of Photoshop work I did about a year and a half ago. Back in my Mass effect craze. This Salarian was meant to be some sort of Casino tycoon.

Overview

This is my 2015 University portfolio, for application into Media Design Schools Game art course. It contains numerous different pieces that I hope broadly show case a bunch of different skills. Most of the art comes from my level 3 Design project, in which I chose to make a comic book based of an rpg universe of my own making. Fragment strays started out as a light hearted adventure but over the course of the year it’s mood and themes got significantly darker. Everything for Fragment Strays was designed and drawn by me with help of some close friends and my Teachers.
